Baseball Overcomes Late Deficit to Knock off Anderson

HICKORY, N.C. - After jumping ahead 4-0, No. 18 Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball saw its lead evaporate after Anderson scored seven runs in the middle innings and then came from behind to beat the Trojans 10-7 and improve to 18-0 at home this season. Drew Yniesta hit his 5th home run of the year, and Matt Mackey had three RBIs to lead the Bears to the come-from-behind victory.

No. 18 Lenoir-Rhyne 10, Anderson 7
Records: Lenoir-Rhyne (25-2, 6-1 SAC), Anderson (14-8, 1-6 SAC)
Location: Hickory, N.C. | Durham Field

STATS AND INFO
  • With rain falling and the wind gusting in the 1st inning, Yniesta roped his 5th homer of the year to left field to drive in Wade Cuda
  • The Bears added two more runs in the 3rd inning on back-to-back RBI bunts from Cole Laskowski and Matt Mackey
  • After facing the minimum through three innings, LR starter Austin Edwards ran into trouble with two outs in the 4th with back-to-back RBI singles to cut the lead to 4-3.
  • Mackey added another RBI in the 5th with a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-3.
  • Anderson hit two home runs in the 6th inning to take their first lead of the game at 6-5, and then another RBI single for the Trojans made it 7-5 in the 7th.
  • As they often do, the Bears came to life offensviely in the clutch. An RBI double from Anthony Porrino was the third hit in a row for the Bears in the bottom of the 7th, which made it 7-6. Laskowski then tied the game with an opposite-field RBI single to drive in Clarno and make it 7-7.
  • Another sacrifice bunt and RBI for Mackey gave the Bears the lead back at 8-7, and they would never relinquish it after that. Laskowski scored the 9th run on a wild pitch, and and Luis Atiles came home on a passed ball in the 8th.
  • Spencer Floyd got his first career save, pitching a perfect 9th inning following up Braden Houston's perfect 8th inning.
  • Mackey finished with three RBIs, but didn't actually record an at-bat. He walked twice and had two RBI sacrifice bunts.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • LR moves to 18-0 at home this season. The Bears won 19 total games in 2021, and have nearly surpassed that number at home alone in 2022.
  • The Bears are now 11-0 when scoring 10+ runs this season.
  • Floyd's ERA is lowered to 0.71, and Houston's decreases to 0.77
  • The Bears have now won four out of the last five games against Anderson.
  • This weekend is the Trojans' first trip to Hickory since March of 2019.
