Bears Cruise to Victory at King

Bristol, Tenn.-- The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball team returned to the court following their holiday break and jumped out to a 24-5 lead after the first quarter as the Bears cruised to a 92-49 victory at King on Saturday afternoon.  Five Bears scored in double figures led by 18 points off the bench from Mikeba Jones while Alexandra Merceron and Blaikley Crooks added 13 points each.

STATS AND INFO:

  • First trip to Bristol for the Bears since the 2005 season. 
  • Bears defeat King 79-54 in last year match up in Shuford Arena. 
  • Crooks is now 38 points away from 1,000 in her career. 
  • Merceron made her first career start today. 
  • The 43-point victory was the biggest since last year's 94-34 win over Converse. 

FIRST HALF:

  • The Bears scored 20 of the game's first 21 points as King's first basket of the game did not come until the 1:43 mark of the first quarter. 
  • 20 of the Bears' 24 points in the first quarter came off turnovers as the Bears forced ten in the first period.  
  • Bears then extended their lead to 32 points as LR took a 52-20 lead into the break. 
  • Crooks lead the Bears with 10 points in the first half as eight Bears had at least four points in the first twenty minutes. 

SECOND HALF:

  • Bears grew their lead to 40 as Mikeba Jones hit a layup to gave the Bears a 67-27 lead with 5:15 left in the third period. 
  • King had their best run of the game right after with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 67-37.
  • However, that would be the closest King would get as the Bears used a strong 4th quarter to grow their lead to 43 points. Courtney Fields had an old-fashion three point play to give the Bears their final points of the contest and their biggest lead of the game at 92-49. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Playing in just her second game of the season, Fields scored 12 points in 13 minutes off the bench. 
  • Emily Harman just missed a double-double with 9 points and eleven assists in 29 minutes. 
  • Bears shot 21-23 from the free-throw line led by 5-5 from Tilda Lindstrom. 
  • Lindstrom added 12 points and six rebounds. Lindstrom has scored double-digits in three straight games. 

UP NEXT: Bears will jump back into conference play with a match up against Limestone on Wednesday in Gaffney. Tip-off is at 5:30 PM.
