WISE, Va. - The Lenoir Rhyne Men's Tennis Team snapped their four-match losing streak on Saturday as it swept UVA-Wise, 7-0, in their SAC opener.
In doubles, the Bears were able to glide to an easy point after convincing victories in No. 1 Doubles and No. 3 Doubles. The top team of Zachary Cox and Vadym Rogynskyi took a 6-2 victory, with the pairing of Mattias Selde and Connor Gibson securing a solid 6-3 result.
In No. 2 Doubles, Patrik Alvestrand and Joel Hemmings had the most competitive match, but were still able to break a late game and take the set, 7-5.
Moving into singles, four of the six matches that the Bears won required a third set.
At the top singles spot, Cox had a tale of two sets with a 6-2 first set win but dropped the second set 1-6. The former SAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week recovered in the third set with a 6-1 victory in the decisive set.
In No. 3 singles, Gibson blanked his opponent, 6-0, in his third set to grab another win for the Bears. In No. 5 singles, after Alvestrand dropped the first set, he responded with back-to-back set victories of 6-4, 6-2 in the second and third sets, respectively.
Hemmings was the other Bear that needed three sets to pull off the victory in No. 4 singles; After winning a tiebreaker in the opening set, the junior won the third set in another tiebreaker, this time a 10-4 victory to take the match.
In the other singles matches, Rogynskyi coasted his way to a 6-4, 6-2 victory in No. 2 singles while Selde won No. 6 singles in a pro-set fromat, an 8-1 decision in favor of the Bears' sophomore.
The men's tennis squad will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 as their road trip heads north to West Virginia to take on Charleston at 1:00 p.m.
