Bears Suffer First Home Loss of the Season against No. 8 Wingate

HICKORY, N.C.-- The No. 4 Lenoir-Rhyne men's lacrosse team saw its 15-game home winning streak come to an end at the hands of rival Wingate on Wednesday night at Moretz Stadium. The win also snapped LR's 12 game winning streak against SAC foes and four-game winning streak over the Bulldogs.

STATS OF THE GAME
  • Wingate jumped out of the gates quick with back-to-back goals to start the scoring. 
  • LR would even the score at two with goals from Myles Moffat and Jarrett Huff just 24 seconds apart.
  • However, the Bulldogs would blow it open with an 8-0 scoring spurt keyed by Willie Grieco (2g, 2a) and Danny Riley (2g) to make it 10-2 at the 4:02 mark of the second quarter.
  • LR would end a nearly 23 minute scoring drought with a tally from Tommy Aguilar to close the first half scoring at 10-3 in favor of the visitors.
  • Tommy Aguilar and Toron Eccleston each scored twice in the second half but LR wasn't able to pull closer than five goals in the second half. 
  • Grieco finished with nine points on four goals and five assists and Riley had two goals and three assists. 
  • Johnny Caponi netted 18 saves in goal for Wingate and James Kotcamp went 16-of-26 in face offs.
  • Aguilar finished with a hat trick for LR.
  • The Bears out shot Wingate 53-37 but Caponi's 18 saves were the difference. 
  • LR came in as the second-best extra man offense in the nation but were held to just 1-for-8 tonight. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • For the sixth straight head-to-head matchup, both teams entered ranked in the top 20 nationally.
  • For the fifth straight meeting, each team entered ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
  • LR still owns a 10-7 lead in the all-time series against the Bulldogs.
  • Each of LR's two losses this season have come against teams ranked in the top 10. 
  • LR came in allowing just 7.1 goals per game but Wingate scored eight in the first quarter alone. 
UP NEXT: The Bears will look to right the ship on Saturday when they travel to Lincoln Memorial for a 4 p.m. face off.
