WAKE FOREST, NC - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Triathlon Team battled to a second place finish at the East Regionals on Saturday. Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene at Lake Norman, this race was moved to Wake Forest.
For the second straight year,
Sabrina Fleig is the East Regional Champion. Her time of 1:00:07.8 blew the rest of the DII competitors out of the water, as she won by 43 seconds. Her time would have placed her seventh in the DI competition. Fleig was fourth after the swim, but made up ground and was in second after a 30:01 bike. Her running prowess gave her the win, as she ran an 18:06 5k to close out the race. Not far behind Fleig and joining her on the All-Region team was
Zoila Sicilia, who came through in fifth thanks to a final time of 1:01:41.0. Sicilia's final 5k time of 18:56 helped her jump multiple spots to grab the top-five finish.
A veteran,
Eliska Rihova finished in the top-ten for the third consecutive year, coming through with a final time of 1:02:56.8. Finishing 10th was
Claudia Teran-Romagosa, who's gutsy performance gave her a final time of 1:03:30.6. Teran, who finished third in the swim with a time of 10:20, crashed in the bike portion of the race, as a competitors bike malfunctioned right in front of her. Despite the fall and and injury she persevered, coming through with the 12th fastest bike time (31:03) and the ninth fastest run (20:22).
Joining those four in the top-20 were
Maidi Quezada-O'Connor (1:04:44.9),
Isis Gaskin (1:05:47.3),
Alex Linden (1:05:51.9),
Alessandra Maso (1:06:41.0),
Ashlynn Webb (1:08:23.4), and
Morgan Barnes (1:08:41.0).
As a team, the Bears took second, just behind Wingate. Lenoir-Rhyne will learn their nationals fate later this week.
