Big First Quarter Lifts Bears over Saints

Hickory, N.C.-- After the Saints scored the first basket of the game, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball team scored the next 16 points as LR opened a 24-7 lead after ten minutes as the Bears took home the 71-60 victory Saturday afternoon inside the Shu. The Bears had five players in double figures, led by Emily Harman 18 points while Mikeba Jones was one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. The win was the Bears tenth SAC win of the season.

STATS AND INFO:

  • Today was the Annual Play4Kay game as the Bears wore pink uniforms in honor. 
  • This is the first time the Bears have swept the Saints in the season series as SAC foes.
  • This is the first win in Hickory against Limestone since the 2011 season. 
  • Emily Harman moved past Madi Suddreth for 9th all-time in scoring in program history in the first half today. 
  • Harman also moved past Donna Elrod for 6th most assists all-time with her six
  • Crooks becomes the 16th player in program history to eclipse the 1100 point mark. 

FIRST HALF:

  • Limestone scored the first basket of the game but it was the Bears who scored the next 16 points. 
  • After opening a 17-point lead after ten minutes, the Bears only shot 17% in the second quarter as Limestone held the Bears to seven points and cut the lead to 31-21 at half.
  • Harman had 12 points in the first half while Tilda Lindstrom had eight points in the opening twenty minutes. 

SECOND HALF:

  • After the Saints scored the first basketball of the second half, the Bears responded once again with a 13-3 run to open an 18-point lead. 
  • With 66% shooting from the floor in the third quarter the Bears opened a 20 point lead after three quarters.
  • LR did not allow the Saints to make a run early in the 4th quarter as LR grew their lead to 27 with 7:16 left before the Saints made a late push but could not cut the lead into single digits before time expired as LR takes this one 71-60. 

BEYOND THE BOX SORE:

  • Crooks, Lindstrom and Jayda Glass each had 11 points on the afternoon.
  • Crooks added eight rebounds and five assists to her box score. 
  • Jones and Glass each had three steals for the Bears. 
  • Bears had only eight turnovers on the night. LR moved to 4-1 when they have ten or less turnovers this season. 

UP NEXT: LR will have their first home midweek conference game of the season as Anderson comes to town on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 from the Shu.
