Volleyball sets program record with their 12th straight win to open season

HICKORY, NC - The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team set a program record with their 11th straight win on Saturday afternoon against Mars Hill. The Bears then extended their new record with their 12th straight win, taking down UNC Pembroke in an intense five-set victory. Kayli Cleaver had 19 kills in the night cap while Jenna Vogen had 16. In the first game, The Bears moved to 3-0 in the SAC with their 6th sweep of the season. 

"This team works so hard in practice to make each other better. Being able to go deep in our bench is a big reason we are 12-0," states head coach Nicole Barringer. "This group is always smiling and fun to be around. We are all very excited to keep things going this coming week!"

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final Game One: Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Mars Hill 0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-11)
Final Game Two:  Lenoir-Rhyne 3, UNC-Pembroke 2 (22-25, 27-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-7)

STATS OF THE MATCH GAME ONE:
  • First two sets were back and forth as the Bears, with the Bears squeaking out both sets 25-23. 
  • The final set was all Bears, with LR jumping out to 10-4 and 16-7 leads on the way for their 6th sweep of the season. 
  • LR had a balanced attack as nine different Bears recorded a kill, but none tallied more than seven.
  • Brooke Aeschliman led with seven kills, followed by Jenna Vogen with six.
  • Sydney Karjala had a double double with 15 assists and 12 digs, both tops on the team. 
  • LR controlled the net as the Bears had a commanding 12-0 lead on blocks.  
STATS OF THE MATCH GAME TWO:
  • For the first time at home this season, the Bears dropped the first set as the Braves held on for a 25-22 opening set victory. 
  • LR was close to falling down 2-0 for the first time this year, but with the score tied 25-25, Jenna Vogen and Averie Dale had back-to-back kills to tie the match at one.
  • Following two close sets, the third set went convincingly to UNCP and fourth convincingly to the Bears.
  • Playing in their first 5th set of the season, LR jumped out to a 3-0, eventually expanding it to a 9-2 lead. 
  • Vogen then had three straight kills for the Bears before Taylor Osborne crushed the final kill to move the Bears to 12-0 on the season. 
  • Cleaver finished with 19 kills on a .559 hitting percentage. LR as a team hit .266 in the night cap. 
  • Lindsie Warren finished with a season-high 18 digs. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • UNC Pembroke defeated Mars Hill 3-2 earlier in the afternoon. 
  • Averie Dale had a career-high seven blocks in the first game. 
  • Vogen went over the 100 kill mark for the season.
  • Vogen is also fourth in the SAC with 133 digs. 
  • Cleaver now leads the SAC with 141 kills.
UP NEXT: Bears will head to Anderson on Tuesday evening for a key SAC matchup. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
