Bears fall in battle at Wingate

WINGATE, NC - Down by as many as 13 in the fourth, the Bears fought back, cutting it to as close as three with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The Wingate Bulldogs weathered the storm, however, as they hit a huge three and a jumper to secure the 67-60 victory. 

Four Bears scored in double-figures in this one, led by Emily Harman's 15.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Thanks to a couple jumpers from Emily Harman and a three from Sarah Burton, the Bears went up 11-6 early.
  • Wingate closed the opening frame on a 13-3 run to lead 17-14 after one.
  • A quick five points from Alexandra Merceron and Burton gave LR a two-point lead early in the second, their last lead of the game.
  • The quarter was close throughout, but Wingate hit three late free throws to take a 35-28 advantage into the half.
  • The Bulldogs kept their foot on the gas in the second half, eventually taking a 59-46 lead with 6:23 remaining in the game.
  • Three straight threes from Blaikley Crooks, Harman and Burton helped cut the lead to 60-57 late in the game.
  • Tilda Lindstroem hit a late three, but Wingate matched her bucket and added one more to get the seven-point victory.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Emily Harman led the Bears with 15 points, followed by Sarah Burton (12), Blaikley Crooks (12), and Alexandra Merceron (11).
  • Maleiya Hill dished out seven assists in the contest.
  • The Bears won the turnover battle, coughing up the ball just 11 times, compared to 16 for Wingate.
  • LR shot 23-63 (36.5%) from the field and 11-39 (28.2%) from three.
  • Wingate went 24-52 (46.2%) from the floor and 3-9 (33.3%) from behind the arc.
UP NEXT: The Bears will be back at home on Saturday when they play host to the Carson-Newman Eagles. The Bears and Eagles faced off back in November in Tennesee, with C-N coming away with a 92-72 victory. The Eagles most recently took down Anderson 78-75 last Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Shuford Arena.
