Softball battles back to sweep on day one of Bear Bash

Hickory, N.C.-- A five-run bottom of the sixth inning gave the Bears a 9-7 win over Young Harris in the second game of the opening day of Bear Bash I. Down 7-4, Alexandria Gray hit her first career home run, which was followed by a Julia Mardigian RBI double to tie it. Lani Warren broke the tie with a two-run two-out single. Warren went 2-4 with 4 RBI's. 

In the opening game, LR came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Assumption 4-3. Madison Primm hit her first home run of the season while Madison Wilson picked up two victories in the circle as Wilson came in relief in both games.

STORY OF GAME ONE:
  • Both teams had a runner on third with one out in the first but neither team could capitalize on the early threat. 
  • Assumption got on the board with three runs in the 4th as a key stolen base and safety squeeze highlighted the inning for Assumption. 
  • LR tied it with a three-run fifth as Primm connected on a two-run home run. Avery Kiger drove in Lani Warren with a two-out RBI single.
  • Alexandria Gray led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, which eventually led to pitch runner Alycea Gilliam scoring on a Greyhound error to give the Bears a 4-3 lead. That run was the game winner as the Bears held Assumption in the 7th. 
  • Madison Wilson (2-2) picked up the win in the circle in relief as she went 1 1/3 innings. Alissa Russ started and went 5 2/3 allowing just one earned run and striking out five.
  • Julia Mardigian, Primm, and Warren had two hits a piece for the Bears.

STORY OF GAME TWO:

  • After Young Harris scored via a solo home run in the top of first, the Bears responded with three in the bottom of the inning, thanks to an RBI double from Cassidy Wall and a two-run RBI double from Warren. 
  • Young Harris had a big five-run 5th when they scored four runs with two outs, including a two-run home run from Gracie Hughes.
  • The Bears got one back with Wall's first home run of the season. 
  • After Young Harris stretched the lead to 7-4, the Bears put up a five spot in the bottom of the sixth.
  • The scoring started with a two-run home run from Gray. Julia Mardigian's 5th hit of the day and RBI double tied the game, then Warren give the Bears the lead with a two-out, two-run single. 
  • Faith Carrigan got the start and went 4 2/3 while Wilson came in relief and pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up just one unearned run. 
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • This was the first ever meeting between the Bears and Greyhounds.
  • This was also Young Harris' first trip back to Hickory since the 2020 season where the Bears defeated then #1 Young Harris 11-10 in a 9-inning thriller. 
  • Rackard is now two hits shy of 200 for her career. 
  • Wilson's win in game one was her 20th career win. 
  • Wall's home run was her 27th of her career. 
  • Mardigian now has 148 career RBIs. 
UP NEXT: Bears will face West Liberty at 2:30 pm and Augusta at 4:30 pm tomorrow to conclude Bear Bash I at McCrorie Family Stadium.
