Bears use long ball to take down Southern Wesleyan

HICKORY, NC - The best home run hitting team in DII continues to shine, as Lenoir-Rhyne hit four more bombs today to take down Southern Wesleyan 7-4 at Durham Field. This brings their season total to 44 home runs, the most in DII and the third most across all NCAA divisions. 

All but one Bear registered a hit in this one, with Mackenzie Wainwright, Sal Carricato, Hogan Stallings, and Eli Willen each going yard.

GAME INFO:
  • The first inning consisted of four solo home runs. 
  • Southern Wesleyan opened their scoring with two solo shots in the first, while LR came right back with two off the bats of Mackenzie Wainwright and Sal Carricato.
  • The Warriors re-took the lead in the third with another solo home run.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne tied things up in the bottom of the third with the only non-home run related run of the game, an RBI single from Michael Logan.
  • The Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to blow the game open. 
  • With two outs on the board, Hogan Stallings hit a three-run shot, which was followed by an Eli Willen solo home run on the very next at bat.
STATS OF THE GAME: BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Mackenzie Wainwright (10) and Sal Carricato (11) are the only teammates in the country with double-figure home runs.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne ranks first in the country with 44 total home runs.
  • They also rank fourth in batting average (.357) and fifth in doubles (54). 
  • Wainwright is tied for the national lead with 38 runs scored.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne resumes conference play this weekend when they travel to Emory, Virginia, to take on Emory & Henry. The Wasps currently sit at 5-17 (2-10 SAC) and took down UVA Wise 2-0 earlier tonight. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
