Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Emory & Henry

Emory, VA. - The Lenoir-Rhyne baseball team split a pair of games at Emory & Henry on Friday afternoon. With incoming weather coming this weekend, the teams moved their doubleheader to today and the single game tomorrow. Sal Carricato hit a three-run home run in each game as Cole Stanford added a pair of home runs in the night cap. Will Girardi picked up the win in game two, throwing six scoreless innings.

The Bears will look for their fourth straight SAC series win tomorrow as the two teams conclude their series at 12:00 PM.

GAME ONE INFO:
  • LR was down 1-0 early but a RBI groundout by Owen Blackledge tied it at one in the top of the 3rd inning.
  • Two batters later, Sal Carricato hit a three-run home run to give LR the lead.
  • Mackenzie Wainwright extended the lead to 5-1 as he drove in Eli Willen in the top of the 4th.  
  • After the Wasps cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the 5th, LR responded with RBI hits from Wainwright and Blackledge to extend the lead back to five. 
  • However the Bears bullpen could not hold the lead  as the pen was charged with 11 runs in the final three innings.
  • Emory & Henry scored five runs in the 6th and six runs in the 7th to open a 14-8 lead. 
  • LR added a run in the 8th but for the first time in conference play the Bears drop game one of the series. 
  • Wainwright had three hits for the seventh time this year while Joseph Mozingo added three hits as well.
  • Wainright, Blackledge and Carricato each had three RBI's as the trio drove in all the runs in this game. 
GAME TWO INFO:
  • Cole Stanford got the Bears on the board first with his 4th home run of the year. It was Stanford's first home run away from Durham Field this year. He also added a second home run in the eight-run 4th. 
  • Carricato hit his 40th career home run in the third inning, his second three-run shot of the day.  Mozingo then added a two-run shot a few batters later to open a 6-0 lead. 
  • Wainwright and Cole Laskowski kept their streaks alive as the duo has reached base in all 24 games this year. Both notched RBI hits in the big 4th inning.
  • LR finished the 4th inning with an eight spot, cruising to a 14-0 victory to split the weather adjusted doubleheader. 
  • Laskowski, Wainright, Mozingo, Stanford and Alex Khan each had two hits as LR finished with 13 hits in the seven inning game. 
  • William Girardi pitched six scoreless innings to pick up the win, striking out nine Wasps and only allowing two hits. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Today was the Wasps first ever win over LR. LR swept both SAC series since E&H joined the conference in 2023.
  • Carricato became just the 10th player in SAC history to hit 40 home runs in a career. 
  • Wainwright's hitting streak is now at 14 games. 
  • Five more hits today bought Wainwright's average up to .480 on the year. 
  • LR came into the weekend series leading the nation with 44 home runs and added five more today.
  • Washburn is in second place with 39 home runs on the year. 
  • In the SAC, LR has hit over double the home runs of second place team (Lincoln Memorial - 21).
UP NEXT: The teams will conclude the three game series with a single game tomorrow as LR will look for their fourth straight series win.  First pitched is scheduled for 12:00 PM from Emory, Virginia.
