Softball sweeps UVA-Wise to move to 5-1 in SAC

Hickory, N.C. -- Madison Wilson did it all in the first game as Wilson went 2-2 at the plate with a double, a home run and drove in a career high four runs as Wilson also spun her second complete game shutout of the season in the circle as LR took care of the visiting UVA-Wise 8-0 in five innings in the opening game. 

In the night cap, LR pounded out 17 hits lead by three from Katelyn Rackard, Avery Kiger and Madison Primm each to win 12-4 to complete the sweep of UVA-Wise as LR moves to 5-1 in the SAC.  Primm also hit a solo home run in each of the games. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STORY OF GAME ONE:
  • Wilson helped herself with a base clearing RBI double as LR struck for a five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead. 
  • Wilson then cranked her first home run of the season in her next at bat as Wilson finished the game 2-2 with a double, home run and four RBIs. The four RBIs are a career high for the sophomore. 
  • Avery Kiger added a RBI double in the 4th to give LR a 7-0 lead. 
  • Primm then called game with a solo blast to lead off the 5th inning to evoke the mercy rule. 
  • Wilson picked up win number nine of the season in the circle as Wilson allowed just two singles in her second complete game shutout of the season. 
  • Lani Warren had her third three-hit game of the season which moved her average up to .427 on the year. 

STORY OF GAME TWO:

  • Cavs scored first in this one but Kiger gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the 1st. 
  • Wall and Kiger each had two RBIs in the Bears five-run second inning, Its the second straight game the Bears scored five runs in the second. 
  • Kiger then picked up RBI three and four with a two-run bomb to centerfield in the 5th to give LR the 9-2 lead. It was also Kiger's first four RBI game.
  • UVA-Wise scored twice in the 6th but LR responded with three runs to pick up the victory 12-4. Katelyn Cozort had a pitch-hit RBI double then came around to score on Rackard's third hit of the game to walk it off.  Rackard, Kiger and Primm each had three hits in this one. 
  • Faith Carrigan got the start and pitched four innings to pick up her 5th win of the year.  Alissa Russ threw two innings out of the pen allowing two runs. 
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Bears have now won 10 straight against UVA-Wise.
  • Mardigian started her 200th career game today. 
  • Wall's double in the first game was her 51st in her career, which moved her into place 8th all-time. Wall added her 52nd double in the second game. 
  • Wall's second double was also her 12th of the season, which is just one off the lead in all of Division II. 
  • Wilson's shutout was her 5th career complete game shutout in her career. 
  • Primm is up to .434 average with seven home runs and 20 RBIs on the season. 
  • Shena Hollar is now sits at 994 wins in her Lenoir-Rhyne coaching career.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will head to Lincoln Memorial on Friday afternoon. The double header was scheduled for Saturday but with weather coming into this weekend, the games will be moved up a day.  LMU is 19-8 and 3-3 in the SAC after sweeping Coker today.  First-pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM from Harrogate, Tenn.
