Softball picks up 20th win in split at Coker

Hartsville, S.C.--The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball team picked up win number 20 of the season in a Saturday split at Coker. Julia Mardigan become the 12th player in program history to hit 30 home runs with a three-run shot in game one. Despite her long ball, the Bears fell 5-4 in the opener.

In game two Faith Carrigan hit a two-run home run and picked up her 7th victory with a complete game in the circle while Madison Primm added a solo home run in the 7th inning to help the Bears earn the split with a 6-4 win. Avery Kiger had a RBI single in the first inning and has now had an RBI in 10 straight games.

STORY OF GAME ONE:
  • Mardigian got the Bears on the board with her 30th career home run, a three-run shot in the 3rd inning. 
  • Avery Kiger extended the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single two batters later.
  • The Cobras got a single run in the 5th as LR took a 4-1 lead into the 7th inning. 
  • With Coker down 4-2 with two outs in the 7th, LR made an fielding error which allowed the tying run to score. Coker walked it off two batters later with an RBI single.
  • LR had eight hits in the game, led by two from Madison Wilson. She also added a pair of stolen bases. 
  • Wilson did take the loss in the circle, allowing just three hits but gave up five runs, only three of which were earned. Wilson did strike out 10 in the contest. 

STORY OF GAME TWO:

  • With the score knotted up at 2-2, Faith Carrigan hit a two-run home run in the 6th inning to give the Bears the lead. 
  • Mardigian added a RBI single later in the 6th before Primm added a key insurance run with her 10th home run of the season. 
  • Coker got within 6-4 thanks to a run in the 7th but Carrigan closed the door for her 7th win. Carrigan only allowed one earned run and struck out eight Cobras. 
  • The Bears had 11 hits in this one with Carrigan, Mardigian and Cassidy Wall each having two hits.
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Coker snapped the Bears eight game winning streak in the series. 
  • Mardigian tied teammate Cassidy Wall and Karrie Pushard for 10th all-time with 30 career home runs. 
  • Mardigian moved pass Kat Rivers for 4th all-time in hits (256).
  • Head Coach Shena Hollar sits at 998 career wins at Lenoir-Rhyne. 
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will return home on Wednesday to host Emory & Henry. The Wasps are 24-12 and 5-5 in the SAC after splitting a pair of games with Catawba today. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM from McCrorie Family Stadium.
