Bears and Wolves play to Saturday split

Newberry, S.C.-- Madison Primm had six hits on Saturday as the sophomore led Lenoir-Rhyne to a split with Newberry. In the opener, the Bears battled back to tie it at four but the Wolves scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Bears 8-5.  

In game two it was LR that scored late to capitalize as the Bears scored five times in the 7th to earn the split with a 8-3 win. Primm and Avery Kiger both hit home runs early in the game as the duo also had RBI's in the big 7th inning to help the Bears earn the victory.

STORY OF GAME ONE:
  • The Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring once in the first and three times in the third. 
  • Julia Mardigian's 64th career double got the Bears on the board in the 5th.
  • Madison Wilson's first of two extra base hits of the game drove in Kaylee Chapman to get the Bears to 4-2 in the 6th inning.
  • Kaitlyn Rackard and Avery Kiger added RBI's later in the inning to tie the game at four.
  • Newberry responded with a four-run bottom half to extended their lead back to four. 
  • Cassidy Wall had a solo home run in the 7th but Newberry did not allow any more runs to take game one 8-5.
  • Madison Primm had her fifth three-hit game of the season and scored a pair of runs. 

STORY OF GAME TWO:

  • After the Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Primm got a run back with a solo shot in the 4th.
  • With the score 3-1, Kiger tied it with a two-run shot in the 6th inning. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne then took control with a five run 5th inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Primm.
  • Faith Carrigan had two hits at the plate joining Primm and Kiger with multi-hit game
  • Carrigan also got the win in the circle, throwing the complete game while striking out seven. 

STATS OF THE MATCH:

  • Bears have won six of their last eight against Newberry
  • LR has now hit 75 home runs on the season, which is good for third most in a single season in school history.
  • LR's 75 home runs leads DII.
  • The Bears are still a ways from the program record of 102 home runs during the 2010 season. 
  • Wall's home run was her 33rd of her career, which is tied for sixth most in program history. 
  • Mardigian's double this past Wednesday against Tusculum  was her 63th career double which is a new program record, surpassing Sarah Atkins and Brittany Cherry, who both had 62 in their careers. 
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne will host King on Monday inside McCrorie Family Stadium. The Tornado are 26-18 on the season and have a busy next couple of days as they will host Barton on Sunday before the trip to Hickory on Monday. First-pitch is schedule at 2:00 PM.
