Women's Lacrosse tops Belmont Abbey 16-9

Hickory, N.C.-- In a battle of two 8-7 teams, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse team topped Belmont Abbey 16-9 on Wednesday evening inside Moretz Stadium. Nine different Bears scored, led by four goals from Chloe Christensen. Ellie Campbell pitched in three goals while Alexa Burghardt and Kirra Olson had a pair. 

Christensen's second goal of the game was her 100th career goal. She becomes the 9th player in program history to score 100 career goals. 

The Bears will now look for their first double digit win season since 2019 when they host Catawba a week from tonight in the Bears' final game of the regular season. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Five different Bears scored in the opening quarter as LR raced out to a 5-2 lead after fifteen minutes. 
  • Christensen had a hat trick in the second period as she scored three of her four goals in the period as LR took a 11-4 lead into the break. 
  • The Crusaders held the Bears to just one goal in the third as Belmont Abbey did cut the lead to 12-7 heading into the final period. 
  • Up 12-8 in the fourth, LR scored four of the last five goals of the game as Cassell Richarson, Abbey Walker and Hannah Thomas found the back of the net to go along with Campbell's third goal of the game. 
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Both Sally Friesen and Belmont Abbey's Simmer Eddinger made 11 saves in goal tonight. 
  • LR forced nine turnovers, led by four from Jayden Wheeler. Christensen added three caused turnovers. 
  • LR out shot Belmont Abbey 35-25 on the afternoon. 
  • The Bears won 20 of 28 draw controls led by six from Christensen. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • LR snapped a three game losing streak to Belmont Abbey. 
  • Friesen is now eight saves away from becoming the third goalie in school history with 300 career saves.
  • Wheeler has forced nine caused turnovers the last two games. 
  • Christensen then moved pass Cat Gaffney for 8th in career goals with her 102nd career goal. 
  • The last time the Bears won double digit games was in 2019 when LR won 12 games. 
NEXT UP: Lenoir-Rhyne will have their last regular season game at home next Wednesday as Catawba comes to the town. The Bears are in 5th place in the SAC as Catawba is 3-6 in the SAC and has UVA-Wise on Saturday before the trip to Hickory on Wednesday. First draw is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
