Bears drop first conference match of the year at Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne dropped their first conference match of the year in four sets to No. 20 ranked Wingate on Tuesday night. Emmaleigh Allen, Kayli Cleaver, and Brooke Aeschliman all finished with over 10 kills while Emmie Modlin led the team with 22 assists.

The Bears will look to bounce back this Saturday as they turn their attention to the Newberry Wolves at home.

STORY OF THE MATCH:.
  • Wingate jumped ahead in the first set leading 9-3 forcing Lenoir-Rhyne to use their first timeout. 
  • The Bears finished with seven kills on 32 attack attempts as Wingate took the first set 25-13.
  • Averie Dale opened up the second set with three straight kills.
  • Brooke Aeschliman's fourth kill of the second set gave the Bears their largest lead of the set at 12-7.
  • Kayli Cleaver generated two kills at the end of the second to help the Bears prevail 25-20.
  • Wingate was held to just four kills and a .000 hitting % in the second set.
  • It was a back and forth affair to begin the third set until Wingate jumped ahead 14-8 off a Maggie Fillauer service ace.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne went on a 6-2 run to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 20-16.
  • Wingate would hang on to win 25-23 in the set, finishing with 15 kills and just one attack error.
  • The Bulldogs led as many as 11 points four separate times during the fourth set, winning 25-16.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne had the advantage in kills (56-51) and assists (51-43) while Wingate had the edge in hitting % (.255 to .193)
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Tonight's match was the 83rd meeting between the Bears and Bulldogs.
  • Wingate leads the all-time series 63-20 and have won nine-straight matches against the Bears.
  • This was Emmaleigh Allen's 36th career game with at least double-digit kills. 
  • Hadley Prince hit the 1,000 career digs mark and 500 career digs at Lenoir-Rhyne.
  • 29 digs is a new career high for Prince, surpassing her 23 digs against Slippery Rock last season.
  • Kayli Cleaver now has eight matches with double-digit kills.
  • This was Emmie Modlin's third match with over 20 assists.
  • Brooke Aeschliman finished with a season-high 12 kills and produced 10 digs. 
UP NEXT: The Bears will return home to face off against the Newberry Wolves Saturday afternoon. Newberry is coming off a 3-0 sweep against Mars Hill this past Friday. The match is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET.
