Defense propels Bears to 10th straight victory

SALISBURY, N.C. - Head coach Emry Tsitouris and her Bears are on fire, winners of 10 straight following tonight's 74-64 win at Catawba. This marks Lenoir-Rhyne's longest winning streak and best start since the 2022-23 season.

The Lenoir-Rhyne defense was suffocating, holding the Catawba Indians to just 29.7% from the field and 16.7% from three.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Lenoir-Rhyne went up 5-0 early thanks to a layup from Abigail Brown and three from Elyseia Brown
  • The Bears led by as many as eight in the opening frame and held a 21-16 advantage after 10.
  • Five quick points from Abigail Brown pushed Lenoir-Rhyne's lead to 10 just a minute and a half into the second quarter.
  • Both teams struggled from the field in the quarter, combining for only eight made field goals.
  • Catawba made a small run in the third, cutting the Lenoir-Rhyne lead to just three (37-34).
  • Lenoir-Rhyne responded with a Madilyn Winterton layup and five quick points from Amiya Porter.
  • Lauren Arnold made a layup with four minutes left in the game to give the Bears a 65-50 lead, their largest of the evening. 
  • The Bears hit their free throws late to close out the game.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Four Bears finished in double-figures, led by Abigail Brown's 17 and Elyseia Brown's 15. 
  • Aaliyah El flirted with a double-double, finishing with 11 points and eight boards.
  • Ralee Bare and Madilyn Winterton each dished out four assists.
  • The Bears shot 20-56 (35.7%) from the field and 8-26 (30.8%) from three.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne scored 27 points off 15 Catawba turnovers.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This is just the sixth win streak of 10 games or more in program history.
  • Catawba leads the all-time series 44-32. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne continues to be tied for the top spot in the conference with Carson-Newman and Coker.
UP NEXT: Lenoir-Rhyne is scheduled to travel to Emory & Henry on Saturday. The Wasps fell 82-64 to Lincoln Memorial earlier this evening. The Bears and Wasps have met once this year, a 92-82 overtime victory for Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory. Tip-off for Saturday's contest is set for 2:00 p.m. from Emory, Virginia.
