HICKORY, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball team rebounded from Friday's night shutout loss to sweep Wingate 5-2 and 3-2 on Saturday, taking the SAC opening series on Saturday.
Hugo Tafoya went 6 2/3 innings in the opener to earn his first win while
Jack Renaud got the last seven outs for the save. In the night cap,
Kellen Gradisar went the distance for the complete game shutout.
Sylas Boris was the hero at the plate in game two as he started the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. He followed that up by driving in
Mackenzie Wainwright with a RBI double in the fourth.
Lleyton Lackey hit a huge two-run home run in the opener to help the Bears earn the sweep.

STORY OF GAME ONE:
- It was a pitching duel early but the Bears managed to scratch two runs across the plate in the bottom of the third on a Trent Murchison SAC fly and a Lleyton Lackey RBI groundout.
- Andrew Muraco had a RBI double in the bottom of the 6th to extended the lead to 3-0.
- Jalen Evans notched a two-run double for Wingate to cut the Bears lead to 3-2 in the seventh.
- Lackey got them two runs back with a two-run bomb to right field in the bottom of the inning.
- The pitching of Hugo Tafoya and Jack Renaud was the story as Tafoya (1-0) went 6 2/3 innings to hold this red-hot Wingate offense to just two runs.
- Renaud (S, 1) came in and got a key out to close the 7th and threw back to back clean innings to get his first career save in his first appearance as a Bear.
STORY OF GAME TWO:
- With two outs in the second inning, Sylas Boris connected for his second home run of the season to give LR a 1-0 lead.
- Boris later drove in Mackenzie Wainwright with another two-out hit. He then came around to score on a Wingate error.
- Kellen Gradisar (2-0), coming off earning SAC pitcher of the week last week, was even better today. He scattered seven hits and did not walk anyone in the complete game shutout.
- Trent Murchison, Wainwright, Seth Christmas and Nick Morris added hits in this one.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Gradisar is now 4-0 with a .034 ERA in four starts against Wingate in his career.
- This marked Gradisar's first career shutout.
- Murchinson, Christmas and Wainwright have reached base in all six games so far this season.
- Lackey has at least three RBIs in three of the six games this season.
- Mackenizie Wainwright picked up a hit in both games today to extend his hit streak to 16.
UP NEXT: For the first time in their history the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears will square off with USC Beaufort. The two teams added an mid-week non conference game on Tuesday. USC Beaufort is 3-5 on the season after getting swept by Georgia Southwestern in their Peach belt opening series. First-pitch is scheduled at 3:00 p.m. from Durham Field.
