Bears capture SAC regular season title with victory at Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn. - For the fifth time in program history and the first time since the 2013-14 season, the Lenoir-Rhyne women's basketball team can call themselves South Atlantic Conference regular season champions. The Bears defeated Carson-Newman 93-74 on the road to clinch the title.

Three Bears had 20+ point scorers today, led by a 25 point, 10 rebound double-double from Abigail BrownAmiya Porter poured in a career high 21 points, including five three pointers, while Aaliyah El dropped 20 as the Bears led wire to wire. Lenoir-Rhyne closes the regular season by winning 19 games in a row.

Thanks to this win the Bears locked up the #1 seed in the SAC Tournament and will take on #8 seed Anderson at noon on Wednesday in Rock Hill, S.C.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Amiya Porter hit all five of her shots in the opening quarter, including three from long range, as the Bears led 32-17 after one.
  • Back-to-back threes midway through the second quarter from Lauren Arnold and Abigail Brown put the Bears up 20.
  • 59% shooting from the floor led to 58 first half points from the visitors as LR took a commanding 58-31 lead into the break. 
  • Carson-Newman won the third quarter 24-19 to cut the LR lead to 77-55 through three.
  • A 10-0 run by the Eagles in the four made it an 82-67 game with 4:53 remaining. 
  • An and-1 from Aaliyah El silenced the crowd and alllowed the Bears to pull away.
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Amiya Porter had a career high with 21 points on 8-12 from the field and 5-9 from three.
  • Abigail Brown led all scorers 25 points and hit 9 of her 10 free throws.
  • Aaliyah El was the third Bears with at least twenty points in this one, hitting seven of her 12 shots.
  • Lauren Arnold was a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 16 points and nine boards. 
  • Lenoir-Rhyne shot 31-65 (47.7%) from the field, 9-26 (34.6%) from three, and 22-26 (84.6%) from the free throw line.
  • Carson-Newman was 29-70 (41.4%) from the field, 9-20 (45%) from three, and 7-10 (70%) from the free throw line.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne held a 44-36 edge in points in the paint and led 22-12 in second chance points.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Bears snapped a seven game losing streak in Jefferson City. 
  • This was the first sweep of Carson-Newman since the 2012-13 season. 
  • Abigail Brown had three more blocks today and finished the regular season with 55 blocks, currently fifth most in a single season.
UP NEXT: The Bears will start postseason play as the #1 seed in the SAC Tournament which will start on Wednesday. The Bears will face #8 seeded Anderson at 12:00 p.m. from Rock Hill, S.C.
