Baseball completes weekend sweep in dominating fashion over Columbus State

HICKORY, N.C. - Everything was clicking for the Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball team on Sunday as the Bears completed the sweep of Columbus State in dominating fashion, winning 13-2.

At the plate, Matt Procopio continued his hot start, going 3-for-4 at the plate with his third home run of the season. Procopio finished with three more RBIs to bring his total to 10 on the weekend. Slyas Boris added three hits himself and Conor Linkfield drove in three runs.

Then on the mound the Bears got a stellar start from Kellen Gradisar (1-0). The junior went six innings and allowed just two runs on five hits. The bullpen trio of Kyle Murphy, Brynden Rodriguez, and Cade Spencer held the Cougars' offense hitless over the final three innings.

STORY OF THE GAME:
  • Bears scored first for the first time this weekend with a pair of runs in the second inning.
  • Warrick Wilmot connected on a two-run home run for Columbus State in the 4th inning to tie it at 2-2.
  • After the Wilmot home run, the Bears scored the game's last 11 runs, including Procopio's home run to lead off the 4th. 
  • LR scored three times in the 4th and 5th and after a single run in the 6th put the game out of reach with a four spot in the 7th. 
STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Procopio finished the day 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Linkfield drove in a run in his first three at bats without a hit, notching a sac fly, a sac bunt and a RBI ground out. 
  • The Bears drew 12 walks on the day including three from both Seth Christmas and Andrew Stillinger.
  • Gradisar got 13 ground outs, including two double plays, in his six innings of work. 
  • Murphy, Rodiguez, and Spencer each did not allow a hit in their scoreless inning.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Bears now lead the all-time series 4-3 after winning once last year and taking all three of these games this weekend. 
  • Gradisar's victory was his 17th of his career, which is now tied for 10th all-time. 
  • This was a matchup of two teams in the NCBWA Southeast Regional poll. The Bears were ranked #2 and Columbus State #10. 
UP NEXT: SAC play opens up this weekend as the Bears will welcome Wingate to Durham Field starting with the series opener on Friday afternoon. Wingate is 4-2 on the season after winning their series with #22 Millersville this weekend.including a wild 17-16 extra inning victory today.  First-pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from Hickory.
