VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Three Bears competed today, highlighted by
Tobechukwu Nwokocha's runner-up finish in the long jump. Staying in the competition will be
Havyn Spain, who advanced to the final in the 200 meter dash.
Tobechukwu Nwokocha earned a national runner-up finish in the long jump at the NCAA Division II National Championships on Friday. His leap of 7.71m (25-3.50) led for a brief second before champion Alex Meyer of Indianapolis won with a leap of 7.79m on the last jump of the competition.
"That was a fantastic dual in the long jump," said Director of Track & Field
Bob Braman. "Tobe gutted out the lead jump on his final attempt, you can't ask for more than that. Coach Wisecarver and Tobe have had a great rhythm all season.
Antonyio Davis opened the meet for the Bears with a 14th place finish in the 60m hurdles, making him a Second-Team All-American in the event. He ran a time of 8.04, the second fastest time of his career.
"Antonyio did a great job today. He handled the pressure really well, running his second fastest time ever and earning second-team All-American honors in his first-ever national championship appearance."
Havyn Spain ran in two events, the 200m and 400m. In his first event, the 400, Spain placed 13th with a time of 47.49. The sophomore shined in the 200, winning his heat and finishing fourth in the prelims with a time of 21.06, the second fastest time of his career. This advances him to tomorrow's final at 5:45 p.m., where he will be in heat one.
"Great comeback race for Havyn. A bit of a tactical error kept him out of the 400m final but he executed coach Mahan's plan perfectly in the 200m to win his heat."
Two Bears will compete in finals tomorrow.
Mackenzie Pringle will take part in the triple jump at 3:30, where she is seeded fifth.
Havyn Spain will follow with his 200m final at 5:45 p.m.
