Men's Lacrosse drops Crown Classic matchup vs. Wingate

Charlotte, N.C. - For the second straight year the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears and Wingate Bulldogs met in the Crown Classic, a prestigious lacrosse showcase held in Charlotte. This year the #8 Bulldogs came out on top, defeating the #11 Bears 14-10.

STORY OF THE GAME
  • The opening quarter was a game of runs as Lenoir-Rhyne scored the first three before Wingate answered with four of their own.
  • Owen Scott stopped the bleeding but a Bulldog goal with six seconds left in the frame gave Wingate a 5-4 lead after one.
  • After the Bears tied it at five, Wingate scored the last four goals of the half to take a 9-5 lead into the break. 
  • Donovan Powell and Jarrett Huff opened the second half with goals to cut into the lead, however Wingate closed the third period with three straight scores.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne cut the lead to 12-10 with 6:46 left after three straight goals in the fourth period but LR could not get any closer and Wingate iced the game with two late goals.
STATS OF THE GAME
  • Huff lead the Bears with three goals on the afternoon. 
  • Powell had three assists to go with his pair of goals for a five point game. 
  • Scott was the third LR player with at least two goals.
  • Matthew Mancini won 20 of 27 face-offs today. 
  • Gavin Conlan made nine saves in goal while Gavin Stabile made seven. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • These teams have split the last six games of the series. 
  • Both of these teams will play a non conference game in Hickory on March 25th, after both teams lost games this year due to weather. 
  • With five points today, Powell is up to 118th career points and sits in 11th place all-time in LR history.
NEXT UP: LR will travel to #17 Catawba on Wednesday. The Catawba Indians are 6-1 after their win over University of Alabama Huntsville today. Face-off from Salisbury is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
