No. 17 Newberry hangs on to defeat No. 6 Bears 16-15

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse team put themselves in an early 5-0 deficit but roared back to take an 11-9 lead in the third quarter. Newberry regained momentum by scoring six of the next seven goals and hung on for the 16-15 victory.

Morgan Madish led the Bears with four goals and three assists on the afternoon.

STORY OF THE GAME
  • The Bears saw themselves in an early deficit as Newberry scored the first five goals of the game. 
  • Donovan Powell and Nate Serrano got the Bears on the board late in the first but the Wolves led 6-2 after 15 minutes of play.
  • Lenoir-Rhyne closed the half with two man-up goals but Newberry went into halftime with an 8-5 advantage. 
  • Morgan Madish scored twice in the first 64 seconds of the second half to get the Bears within one, 8-7.
  • After a Newberry goal to make it 9-7, the Bears scored four straight times to take their first lead of the day and had an 11-9 lead with 5:46 left to play in the third. 
  • The Wolves then went on a run by scoring six of the next seven goals to make it 15-12 halfway through the fourth.
  • Owen Scott scored a late goal to cut the lead to one but a key face-off win by Newberry in the closing seconds sealed the win.
STATS OF THE GAME
  • Madish had four goals and three assists for a seven point day. 
  • Donovan Powell had a pair of goals and a pair of assists in this one. 
  • Jarrett Huff had four points off three goals and an assist.
  • Gavin Conlan made eight saves in goal for LR in three and half periods. 
  • Parks Painter caused all kinds of chaos today with four caused turnovers on the contest.  
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • This was Newberry's first ever win over the Bears. 
  • Bears fall to 0-2 this season against ranked opponents. 
  • As LR is now 51-37 lifetime against ranked opponents.
  • Madish's four goals tied a career high.
NEXT UP: LR will play #9 Wingate in the Crown Classic next Saturday from American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. Wingate is currently 4-1 and 2-0 in the SAC after their victory over Tusculum today.
