Bears move to 2-0 in SAC with 12-9 win over Newberry

HICKORY, N.C. - Abbey Walker had three goals and added two assists as the Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse team moved to 2-0 in the SAC with a 12-9 victory over Newberry on Saturday.

Anneleise Meyer, Jessica Mikesell, and Kirra Olson each added two goals in Lenoir-Rhyne's first win over Newberry since 2021.

STORY OF THE GAME
  • After Newberry scored a pair of goals to start, Jessica Mikesell and Abbey Walker both scored to tie it at 2-2 with 5:27 left in the opening quarter. 
  • Newberry closed the first quarter with two more goals to take a 4-2 lead after fifteen minutes. 
  • LR started the second period with four straight goals to take their first lead of the day including two goals in :34 seconds by Kirra Olson and then Anneleise Meyer off the draw control.
  • Newberry scored the last goal of the first half as LR took a 6-5 lead into the break. 
  • Newberry scored three of four goals in the third period to take a 8-7 lead into the final quarter.
  • The Bears held the Wolves to just one goal in the final period as Jessica Mikesell tied the game at 8-8 with a man-up goal.
  • Walker give the Bears the lead for good with her second goal with 12:35 left and iced it with her third goal of the contest with 3:01 left in the game.

  • Walker led the Bears with five points (3 goals, 2 assists)
  • A game after scoring her 100th career goal against Emory & Henry, Olson added two more tonight. 
  • Mikesell had two goals and an assist. 
  • Sally Friesen made nine saves for the Bears in goal.
  • Kylee Taylor and Caitlyn Race had three caused turnovers each. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The win snaps a four game losing streak to Newberry.
  • This was Walker's fifth career game with at least three goals and first of the 2026 season. 
  • Race had nine caused turnovers in the three games this week. 
NEXT UP: The Bears will travel to Florida to face #6 Embry-Riddle on Thursday, who are 3-0 on the season and host #24 Anderson before playing the Bears on Thursday. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
