Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Gets By Catawba College, 3-2, With Late Heroics

Salisbury, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Soccer Team (6-4-1, 2-1) snapped a two-game skid as it knocked off South Atlantic Conference-foe Catawba College (4-6-1, 0-2-1), 3-2, on Wednesday night at Frock Field.? The Bears were lifted by a late goal from junior forward John Ferguson (Fife, SCOTLAND) that came with just 3:18 remaining in regulation.

Junior midfielder Gary Higgins (Paisley, SCOTLAND) put L-R ahead early as he dropped a bomb from 25 yards out that curled into the upper right corner only 3:51 into the contest to make the score 1-0.?

Catawba answered a little over three minutes later when Andrew Landry (Oshawa, Ontario, CANADA) took a through ball from Carson Smith (Mooresville, N.C.), broke through the Bear defense and finished the tying tally from 18 yards out to make it one apiece.

L-R responded at the 22:29 mark when Ferguson flicked on a cross from junior Dave Bailey (Bath, ENGLAND) that was gathered by junior co-captain Martin Graham (Cumbria, ENGLAND) and?blasted from 10 yards out on the right side?to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

Catawba equalized late in the first half as Landry took a pass from Alain Lengliz (Blackpool, ENGLAND) and slotted a tidy finish into the right side with just :53 remaining for his second goal of the contest?to?tie?the game at two heading into the break.

L-R continued its recent trend of outshooting its opponent as it bested the Indians by a 26-11 margin.

But Ferguson made certain that one more of the Bears? 15 shots on goal ended up in the back of the net.? Ferguson?gathered posession of a failed clear attempt by Catawba,?went to goal and placed a composed?10-yard drive into the back of the net for the game-winner and a 3-2 L-R victory.

Ferguson finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Bears.

Junior Tom Heath (Solihull, ENGLAND) made a pair of saves in the win for L-R.? Tyler Held (Virginia Beach, Va.) stayed busy in goal for Catawba as he had to make 10 saves despite the loss.

The Bears come home on Saturday for their annual Homecoming affair as they play host to the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial.? Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
