No. 20 Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Downs Columbus State, 81-71, In Overtime

Mars Hill, N.C. ? The No. 20 Lenoir-Rhyne University Women?s Basketball Team (1-1) picked up its first win of the year with an 81-71 victory over Columbus State (0-1) in overtime Friday night at the Biltmore Farms/Mars Hill Classic at Stanford Arena.? Six players scored in double figures for the Bears, who avenged Monday?s season-opening defeat.

Lenoir-Rhyne was led by sophomore guard Cameron Sealey (Gastonia, N.C.) with 16 points and eight rebounds while three players ? freshman guard Precious Elkins (Conyers, Ga.), junior guard LaCourtney Rann (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior center Denise Moore (Newport News, Va.) ? each scored 13 points for the Bears.

Columbus State was paced by Phebe Smith (Marietta, Ga.) with a game-high 17 points and 13 rebounds but the Cougars shot just 33 percent (23-of-70) from the field including 13 percent (two-for-16) from behind the three-point line.? Columbus State?s Turelle Jones (Cecil, Ga.) added 11 points in the losing effort as well.

The Bears led by as many as 13 points in the first half (28-15 with 6:08 before the break) before the Cougars rallied to take a 47-46 lead at the 10:22 mark of the second half on a jump shot by Hali Moore (Ensley, Ala.).? Moore finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Columbus State.

Lenoir-Rhyne retook the lead and held sway for the remainder of the second half but Columbus State forced overtime with a field goal by Nakita Holt (Ashland, Ala.) with six seconds left to tie it at 67.

L-R put the contest away by scoring the first eight points in the extra frame and eventually outscoring Columbus State, 14-4, in overtime to take the win.

L-R takes on UNC Pembroke on the final day of the classic tournament Saturday at 4 p.m.
