Tigerville, S.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Team (3-1) pulled out a 20-19 win over North Greenville University (1-3) Saturday night in the Bears? road opener at Younts Stadium.? L-R held on a Crusader two-point conversion attempt after a North Greenville touchdown with under two minutes left to preserve the win.
L-R, which opened the year 3-1 for the second straight season, rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit to take the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior quarterback Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.) ran for a game-high 86 yards on 31 carries and scored all three of the Bears? touchdowns to go along with 164 yards passing to lead L-R to the win.
Bear junior wide receiver Nick Stutts (Statesville, N.C.) added seven catches for a career-high 125 yards receiving while Lenoir-Rhyne?s defense held North Greenville to just 235 yards of total offense.
North Greenville?s Idris Anderson (Dallas, Ga.) capped off a five-play, 49-yard drive for the lone score before halftime with a one-yard touchdown run at the 13:45 mark of the second quarter.
L-R finally got on the board with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter when Herron scored from one yard out which concluded an eight-play, 76-yard drive.
The Crusaders responded and pushed the lead back to 13-7 on quarterback Willy Korn?s (Lyman, S.C.) one-yard score at the 2:30 mark of the third quarter.? The score was set up by a Lenoir-Rhyne fumble returned to the Bear one.
Lenoir-Rhyne tied the game again on the following possession with 1:31 left in the third stanza when Herron scored his second touchdown of the contest (a three-yard run) set up by a 52-yard reception by Stutts.
A 16-play, 60-yard drive that lasted 8:12 ended for the Bears with another three-yard touchdown run by Herron, his third score of the game with 5:06 left for a 20-13 advantage.? Herron has scored three touchdowns in a game twice so far in 2010.
North Greenville followed with an eight-play, 76-yard drive of its own finished off with Chavis Claytor?s (Radford, Va.) 19-yard touchdown pass from Korn with 1:46 remaining in the game to cut the lead to one at 20-19.? The Crusaders elected to go for two points but Korn?s pass fell incomplete and the Bears held on for the win.
Korn finished with 110 yards on 10-of-16 passing while Sean Wright (Simpsonville, S.C.) caught five balls for 64 yards in the losing effort for North Greenville.
Senior linebacker Victor Nito (Douglas, Ga.) led the Bears on defense with a team-high nine tackles including seven solo takedowns.
Lenoir-Rhyne does not play again until Saturday, October 2, when it opens South Atlantic Conference play at Newberry.? Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.? North Greenville, meanwhile, plays at Presbyterian next Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
