Former LR Director Of Athletics Neill McGeachy Inducted Into The Inaugural Class Of The Iredell County Sports Hall Of Fame

Former Lenoir-Rhyne University Director of Athletics Neill McGeachy was inducted into the Iredell County Sports Hall Of Fame as part of the inaugural class in Statesville, N.C.

Statesville, N.C. – Former Lenoir-Rhyne Director of Intercollegiate Neill McGeachy was inducted into the Iredell County Sports Hall Of Fame as part of the inaugural class on Monday, May 23, at the Statesville Civic Center.

McGeachy, who served as the director of athletics from 2002 to 2016, was joined in the inaugural class by five other Lenoir-Rhyne graduates:  Gene Abercrombie, Sherry Cash, Herbert Sampsel, Herman Starrette and Harold Johnson.

McGeachy is also a member of Lenoir-Rhyne Sports Hall Of Fame (Class of 1987) and the North Carolina Tennis Hall Of Fame (Class of 1999).  At Lenoir-Rhyne University’s 2016 graduation, McGeachy received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

McGeachy is a 1960 graduate of Statesville High School and a 1965 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University.  McGeachy played football and men’s basketball for both the Greyhounds and the Bears and coached at Statesville, Davidson College, Wake Forest University and Duke University (serving as head coach for one season on an interim basis).

McGeachy also began Sugar Creek Promotions which he ran for 19 years and served as Marketing Director at the United States Tennis Association (Southern Section) in Atlanta, Ga., before returning Lenoir-Rhyne in the winter of 2002.

During his Lenoir-Rhyne tenure, McGeachy was instrumental in growing the athletic department with the addition of 10 sports and an increase in the number of student-athletes by 46 percent.  McGeachy also implemented the PEF/Bears Club Gala and the LR/Moretz Sports Championship Series and expanded corporate sponsorships.  The highlight of McGeachy’s time as Athletics Director at Lenoir-Rhyne may have been the football team’s run to the national championship game in 2013.

McGeachy was also active in the community, serving as a popular speaker and was an integral part of the Hickory Rotary Club where served as a member of the Board of Directors.  McGeachy also served on the Athletics Director Council of the South Atlantic Conference.
