Newberry, S.C. -- Two from the Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Triathlon Team and one from the men's squad traveled to Newberry, SC to compete in an aquathlon, hosted by Newberry College. Alongside them, raced Queens University and Wingate University.
Putting a new spin on multisport racing, the bike was taken out of the race and replaced with two alternating swim and runs. Each athlete completed a 275-yard swim, a 1.5-kilometer run, before jumping in the water again for another 275-yard swim and finished with a 1-kilometer run. The entire race is full intensity, with no point on the course allowing for a quick breather. The event takes under 30 minutes for each athlete to complete.
Freshman Asher Lauderdale started out the race for the men's, finishing in his seed position of tenth place. This was the first ever competition for the new men's squad, and a huge steppingstone for the program.
For the women, sophomore
Paige Ewald placed well above her seed finish, chasing down athlete after athlete on the run and Sarah Attala, a weightlifter turned triathlete, completed her first ever multi-sport race.
"This event showcased a lot of the things we're really excited about," remarked Head Coach
Bryant Howard. "This was a glimpse at what we're building here at LR."
