Columbus, GA.-- The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team is preparing for their biggest test this season as the Bears will be playing No. 1 seed in the tournament and the No. 3 overall ranked Columbus State on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Second Round. In the first round, the Bears used a
Ria Acton PK goal on Friday to defeat Limestone 1-0 while Columbus State needed an halftime comeback to defeat the No. 8 seed North Georgia 4-2 on their home turf.
The host comes into this game with a 17-2-1 record and are the number one scoring offense in all of DII. The Cougars average 4.16 goals per goal and are lead by Emma Beddow, who is 5th in the nation with 19 goals. This will be the Bears toughest test to date but the Bears are no strangers to stopping high power offenses this year. LR comes into the game only allowing 0.81 goals per game and held Limestone scoreless on Friday. The Bears also held high-power Catawba to just one goal earlier this season.
S.A. Phillips has been fantastic in goal this postseason making key saves after key saves. Phillips has seven total saves so far in her first post season as a Bear.
On the offense side, the Bears will be looking to attack the Cougars back line in many directions. Acton got the goal on Friday but the Bears had eight different players have a shot on goal in Friday's first round.
Evan O'Leary has been hot with four goals in the past five games. The Bears will look to control the possession in the midfield with their experience with
Neve Duston and
Stephanie Figueiredo and Freshman Carola Busqets. Chances will be limited for both teams in today's game will come down to whoever capitalizes when the moment arrives.
This is the first matchup between the schools since Columbus State knocked the Bears out of the regional finals in 2014 here in Columbus. The Bears will be looking for some revenge eight years later as LR looks to defeat and knock out Columbus State on their home turf.
After a wet and rainy Friday game on the pitch, the weather today looks beautiful. Game time temperature will be the low 50's with plenty of sunshine and limited wind. The Bears will be looking to advance to the sweet sixteen for the second straight season. Tune in here
