Softball Snaps Skid, Sweeps Twinbill From King

Hickory, N.C.-- The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team snapped their five-game losing streak with a sweep of visiting King on Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field. Lauren Rakes and Morgan Beeler allowed just three combined hits in the doubleheader. In game one, Rakes stuck out 12 while allowing just two hits and Beeler allowed just one double as the Bears completed the sweep.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • LR got on the board with two in the bottom of the third. Kylee Leonhardt start the scoring with a SAC fly then Savannah Moorefield scored on an error by the Tornados.
  • Lora Beth Wood added her first home run of the season with a solo shot in the bottom of the 4th to extend the lead to three.
  • Rakes got the start in the circle and stuck out eight of the first nine hitters as the Tornados did not get their first baserunner until the 4th inning.
  • Rakes helped herself with a RBI single in the bottom of the 6th. Rakes then came around to score on Moorefield's two-run double to give the Bears the 6-0 lead.
  • Rakes moves to 2-1 on the season, giving up only two hits while striking out 12 Tornados en route to her first shutout of the year.
STATS OF GAME TWO:
  • A two-out rally got the Bears going in the 1st in the nightcap. With two-out and no one on, Leonhardt doubled, Cassidy Wall walked then Hannah Jennings drove in Leonhardt with an RBI single. Wall then came into score on a fielding error by the Tornado to give the Bears a 2-0 lead after one.
  • Bears broke the game open with a four-run sixth. Moorefield and Katelyn Rackard produced RBI singles and Wall connected with a two-run double to give the Bears 6-0 lead.
  • Beeler just allowed a double in the 4th inning as the junior stuck out six while picking up her second win on the season. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Leonhardt's sac fly in the first game was her 150th career RBI. 
  • Leonhardt's single in the fifth inning of the second game was her 180th career hit.
  • Wood's home run in the first game was her 5th career.
  • This was Rakes and Beelers third career shutouts for the juniors. 
  • With 12 strikeouts today, Rakes surpass the 225th career strikeout in just 190 career innings. 
  • With the sweep today, the Bears move to 8-1 all-time against the Tornados. 
  • Rackard extended her hitting streak to four games with hits in both games. 
UP NEXT: Southern New Hampshire comes to town for the first time on Friday. The first pitch is at 3:00 P.M.
