CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne cross country teams took part in the Queens Royals Cross Country Challenge on Friday, their final tune-up before the conference championships in two weeks.
The women put forth their most impressive showing of the season, taking fourth in the 18 team field. They finished just two points behind Queens and just ahead of NCAA DI Furman and Jacksonville.
On the women's side,
Maria Carmona continued her strong season, setting a new 5k personal best with a time of 17:51.32, good for 14th out of 163 finishers. Coming in just four seconds behind her was fellow countryman
Zoila Sicilia, who broke the 18 minute barrier for a new personal best time of 17:56.65.
Sabrina Fleig was Lenoir-Rhyne's third finisher across the line, taking 30th with a strong time of 18:19.84. Isis Gaskin (18:27.31) and
Regly Jemutai (18:34.21) rounded out the scorers for the Bears.
The men were led by
Leon Fischer, who averaged 5:16 per mile over the 8k course to take 69th with a 26:12.5. Fellow triathlete
Jakub Soucek nearly broke the 27 minute mark, finishing in 27:03.7. Not far behind him was
Sam Sosebee, crossing the line with a time of 27:21.3.
Cristian Cabascango (27:39.5) and
Chase Bryant (28:21.5) were LR's final two scorers.
The Bears won't run again until Saturday, October 25th, when they take part in the SAC Championships. This year's conference championships will take place at Kinser Park in Greeneville, Tennessee.
