Spartanburg, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams kicked off the 2011 season at the Eye Opener Invitational Friday night at the Roger Milliken Center.
The women's team finished eighth out of 20 schools while the men's squad placed 10th out of 18.
Furman and Clemson won the women's and men's team events, respectively.
On the women's side, senior and two-time All-American Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) ran an 18:20 to finish eighth out of 166 runners as the Bears' top runner.
Sophomore Laura Rhyne (Taylorsville, N.C.) placed 53rd overall with a 20:43 while senior Tiffany Payne (Painted Post, N.Y.) ran a 20:55 to finish 60th on the 5K course.
For the Lenoir-Rhyne men, freshman James Palaniuk (Marina, Calif.) ran the 8K in 27:34 to place 35th while freshman Mike York (Kannapolis, N.C.) ran a 27:56, good for 47st overall.
The Bears will next host the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational next Saturday, September 10, at Southside Park in Newton, N.C., beginning at 9:00 a.m.
