Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Opens The 2010 Season With A Doubleheader Sweep Of Glenville State, 8-0 And 11-2

Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team (2-0) opened the 2010 season with a doubleheader sweep of Glenville State University (1-3), 8-0 and 11-2, Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.? The Bears run-ruled the Pioneers in both contests.

Game One ? Lenoir-Rhyne 8, Glenville State 0 (six innings)
Sophomore pitcher Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) (1-0) limited the Pioneers to just two hits to go along with 11 strikeouts while sophomore first baseman Brittany Davidson (Fort Defiance, Va.) and senior designated hitter Ashley Duckworth (Conover, N.C.) each hit home runs in a four-run fourth inning to lead the Bears to the victory.

Duckworth finished three-for-three with two runs batted in and Lenoir-Rhyne ended the contest with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning capped off by senior outfielder Brittany Cherry's RBI double.

Glenville State?s Laura Childers (St. Mary?s, W.Va.) was tagged with the loss.

Game Two ? Lenoir-Rhyne 11, Glenville State 2 (five innings)
Duckworth connected on another home run, a three-run shot, and Lenoir-Rhyne broke the contest open with a seven-run second inning to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers.

Duckworth drove in three runs while sophomore Lauren Harris (Yadkinville, N.C.) (1-0) was credited with the win.

Sophomore second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) also hit a home run for the Bears, who won the game in five innings.? Carpenter's two-run shot keyed a four-run first inning.

The Pioneers? Mandy Parkulo (Shady Springs, W.Va.) suffered the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Charlotte, N.C., to face Queens in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
