Wingate, N.C. ? The No. 16 Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team (31-5, 4-0) swept a key South Atlantic Conference doubleheader showdown with No. 19 Wingate University (25-5, 2-2) Wednesday on the road by scores of 5-0 and 5-0.

L-R sophomore Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) improved to 13-2 on the season after picking up her seventh shutout of the year.? Millwood limited Wingate to just three hits while striking out seven batters en route to the win.

The Bears staked themselves to a 3-0 advantage in the second inning thanks to three Bulldog errors and a run-scoring single by sophomore second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.).

L-R added two more runs in the top of the third inning on junior third baseman Brandi Haithcock?s (Snow Camp, N.C.) two-run double to make it a 5-0 final.? Haithcock finished with two hits and two runs batted in to lead the Bears.

Wingate?s Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, Va.) fell to 13-3 after being tagged with the loss.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Bears broke the contest open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to the doubleheader sweep.

Bear freshman Alex Smith (Cocoa, Fla.) improved to 13-3 on the year as she limited the Bulldogs to just four hits to go along with three strikeouts in picking up the complete-game shutout.

L-R opened the scoring with an RBI single by junior shortstop Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga.) in the top of the third inning.

The score remained 1-0 until L-R?s four-run seventh frame highlighted by a three-run home run from sophomore catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.), her fourth of the season.

Wingate?s Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) fell to 12-2 with the loss.
