Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Tops Alderson-Broaddus, 7-2 and 2-1, To Extend Win Streak

Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team (19-2) extended its winning streak to nine games by taking down Alderson-Broaddus College (0-6) in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field by scores of 7-2 and 2-1.

Sophomore Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) (8-1) recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts as she pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and two earned runs while walking just one batter to lead L-R in the game one victory.

The L-R offense gave Millwood an early cushion by posting a five-run first inning.?

Sophomore second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) and sophomore catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.) connected on RBI singles to give L-R a 2-0 advantage.

Freshman outfielder Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) then drove in Carpenter with a single and sophomore first baseman Brittany Davidson (Fort Defiance, Va.) garnered a run-scoring walk to make it 4-0.?

Junior third baseman Brandi Haithcock (Snow Camp, N.C.) capped the first-inning scoring when she grounded out to drive home senior designated hitter Ashley Duckworth (Conover, N.C.) giving L-R a 5-0 lead.

Carpenter added another RBI single in a two-run second inning to round out the scoring for the Bears.

Junior Brittany Meadows (Crab Orchard, WVa.) gave Alderson-Broaddus hope when she dropped in a two-RBI single to cut the L-R advantage to 7-2 in the top of the sixth but it was not enough as the Bears held on for the victory.

Sophomore pitcher Mareah Cooper (Charleston, WVa.) threw six innings and gave up six earned runs on 12 hits while striking out five batters despite the loss for the Battlers.

Game Two ? Lenoir-Rhyne 2, Alderson-Broaddus 1
Sophomore Lauren Harris (Yadkinville, N.C.) (3-0) pitched a complete game while striking out three batters and conceding no earned runs in the game-two victory for L-R.? Harris allowed just four hits with one walk in the win.

The Bears were unable to generate much offense in the early going, but freshman first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) broke the silence in the home-half of the third when she hit a solo shot to center to give L-R the 1-0 lead.

Alderson-Broaddus answered in the top of the fourth inning when Emily Pritt (Charleston, Wva.) drew a bases-loaded walk to even the score at one.

The Bears got two batters aboard in the bottom of the sixth as Carpenter walked and Duckworth hit a deep double off the wall in center field.? Laxton then hit her second RBI single of the day to drive home Carpenter for the eventual game-winner.

Kat Powell (Miami, Fla.) pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out one batter despite being saddled with the loss for Alderson-Broaddus.
