No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Sweeps Belmont Abbey, 11-3 and 12-3

Belmont, N.C. - The No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team (40-6) swept a doubleheader from Belmont Abbey College (19-23), 11-3 and 12-3, Sunday afternoon at Crusader Field.? L-R senior outfielder Brittany Cherry (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), who finished four-for-eight with six runs batted in on the day, became the school's all-time leader in hits with 250.

Trailing 3-1 after four innings of play, the Bears broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to the win.

Sophomore second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) hit both a solo home run and an RBI single while Cherry drove in two with a double in the frame.

Freshman first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) added a two-run home run in the sixth inning for the Bears, who finished with 12 hits in the contest.

Cherry tallied a game-high four RBI while Carpenter and Fellmeth each finished with two hits and two runs batted in to lead Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Crusaders' Becca Rothrock (Winston-Salem, N.C.) hit a solo home run in the losing effort.

L-R sophomore Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) improved to 17-3 with the victory while Belmont Abbey's Kim Anders (Frederick, Md.) fell to 8-9 with the loss.

The Bears fell behind by a 3-0 score but scored the last 12 runs of the game to run-rule the Crusaders and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Lenoir-Rhyne started its rally with five runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from sophomore catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.), to take the lead for good.

L-R added four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth for a 12-3 final.? Sophomore outfielder Tameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) connected on run-scoring singles in each of the frames.

Junior shortstop Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga.) finished with a game-high three hits and drove in two runs while Cherry and Sealey added two hits and two runs batted in each as the Bears collected 15 hits in the win.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Alex Smith (Cocoa, Fla.) pitched four scoreless innings to improve to 16-3 on the season while Belmont Abbey's Sami Michaelis (Woodville, Ohio) suffered the loss and fell to 5-3.
