L-R Softball Advances To The 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament Championship Game

Wingate, N.C. - The top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (48-7) won twice on Saturday to advance to finals of the 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament.? No. 7 L-R, which defeated Wingate (7-4) and Mars Hill (4-1), will face second-seeded Carson-Newman (36-8) in the championship game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.? The Bears will have to beat the Lady?Eagles twice.

Freshman first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs to lead the Bears to the victory.

Wingate, the fifth seed, jumped ahead 2-0 on a two-run home run by Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) in the bottom of the first inning before Fellmeth tied the game with a two-run round-tripper of her own in the Bears' half of the fourth.

After the Bulldogs scored on an error to take a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bears took the lead for good with a five-run fifth frame.

With the score tied at three with one out in the fifth, Fellmeth connected on the game-winning grand slam to give her eight home runs on the season.

Wingate (35-15)?rounded out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Alex Smith (Cocoa, Fla.) improved to 21-4 after going the distance in picking up the win while Wingate's Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) fell to 16-7 with the setback.

Sophomore Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) limited the fourth-seeded Lions to just one unearned run in six and one-third innings pitched to go along with three strikeouts.? Millwood improved to 20-3 while Smith recorded the final two outs for her second save of the year.

Mars Hill (28-16) opened the scoring on Natalie Haithcox's (Asheboro, N.C.) run-scoring double in the bottom of the first inning.

The contest remained 1-0 until L-R took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third.? Junior shortstop Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga.) drew a bases-loaded walk before Fellmeth hit the game-winning, two-run single.

An RBI double by senior outfielder Brittany Cherry (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) finished off the scoring for the Bears in the bottom of the fourth.?

Haithcox finished three-for-three despite the loss for Mars Hill while junior outfielder Heather Brock (Yadkinville, N.C.) tallied two hits and one run scored for L-R in the win.

The Lady Lions' Tara West (Urbana, Ohio) fell to 14-8 after being tagged with the loss.
