Pembroke, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (1-1) opened the season with a doubleheader split?at UNC Pembroke (5-3) Saturday afternoon at LRA Field.? L-R won the first game by a 5-3 score while UNC Pembroke shut out the Bears, 1-0, in the nightcap.

Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 5, UNC Pembroke 3
Lenoir-Rhyne scored three runs in the top of the first inning and led 4-0 after two innings of play en route to the season-opening win.

The Bears' three-run first inning was keyed by sophomore first baseman Jessica Fellmeth's (Waxhaw, N.C.) two-run single.

An RBI single by junior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) in the second frame pushed the Bears' advantage to 4-0 before the Braves got on the board thanks to Taylor Cloninger's (Jacksonville, N.C.) two-run double in the fourth inning.

After UNC Pembroke cut the lead to 4-3, Lenoir-Rhyne rounded out the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.) in the seventh.

L-R junior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) (1-0) picked up the win on the mound while Jamie Burwell (Enka, N.C.) fell to 2-1 after suffering the loss for UNC Pembroke.

UNC Pembroke's Starr Gilley (Graham, N.C.) (3-1) scattered eight hits while striking out 11 batters in picking up the complete game shutout win.

The Braves' Morgan Patrick (Columbus, N.C.) drove in the game's lone run with an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning.

L-R junior Lauren Harris (Yadkinville, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just one run on three hits while striking out two batters.
