Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Splits Its Two Games Sunday At The Catawba College Invitational

Junior catcher Sarah Atkins hit two home runs for Lenoir-Rhyne in a 7-0 win over East Stroudsburg in the Bears' first game Sunday at the Catawba College Invitational in Salisbury, N.C.

Salisbury, N.C. - The 17th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team (12-4) split its final two games Sunday at the Catawba College Invitational.? L-R defeated East Stroudsburg (Pa.) by a 7-0 score before falling to Lock Haven (Pa.), 4-1.

Junior catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.) hit two home runs while junior Lauren Harris (Yadkinville, N.C.) pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Bears to the win.

Harris improved to 5-1 on the year after limiting the Warriors to just four hits while striking out four batters.

Atkins' two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning help stake the Bears to a 3-0 lead.

Atkins connected on a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the third inning that pushed L-R's margin to 6-0 before rounding out the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth frame.

Atkins finished with four runs batted in while junior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) added two hits and two runs batted in for the Bears.

East Stroudsburg's Caitlin Monahan (Clarks Summit, Pa.) suffered the loss on the mound as the Warriors fell to 3-2 on the year.

The Lady Eagles' Amanda Fernandez (Cheltenham, Pa.) hit a two-run home run while pitcher Sarah Morse (Dover, N.H.) limited the Bears to just one run as Lock Haven snapped Lenoir-Rhyne's six-game winning streak.

Fernandez's home run broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning and Lock Haven took advantage of two L-R errors in the fifth inning by plating two more runs for a 4-0 advantage.

Sophomore first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) finally got the Bears on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Morse struck out?five for Lock Haven (5-0) while L-R junior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) (5-1) suffered her first loss of the year.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Queens in a doubleheader at Bears Field on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
