No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Takes Two From Queens, 4-3 And 17-4

Sophomore shortstop Jody Mizelle finished with three hits and drove in five runs in the second game of Lenoir-Rhyne's doubleheader sweep of Queens, 4-3 and 17-4, Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C.

Charlotte, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (7-1) swept a doubleheader from Queens (2-6), 4-3 and 17-4, Wednesday afternoon at Park Road Park.

L-R broke a three-all tie in the top of the 10th inning when junior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth (Waxhaw, N.C.) scored an unearned run on a Queens error to help the Bears prevail in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Bears opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when sophomore shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) crossed the plate on the passed ball before the Royals scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 2-1 advantage.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman pinch hitter Katie Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) forced extra innings with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning with two innings that tied the score at two.

Both teams plated single runs in the eighth inning before Lenoir-Rhyne's game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning.

L-R senior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) improved to 4-0 on the season after pitching 10 innings and allowing just one earned run to go along with seven strikeouts.? Queens' Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla.) fell to 2-2 with the loss despite allowing one earned run and striking out 12 batters.

Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 17, Queens 4 (five innings)
Mizelle finished with three hits and five runs batted in as L-R rolled to the win to sweep the doubleheader from Queens.

The Bears scored the game's first 11 runs and run-ruled the Royals over five innings en route to the victory.? Mizelle opened the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning before L-R put the game away with five runs in the top of the third.

Queens cut the lead to 11-4 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth but Lenoir-Rhyne squashed any hopes of a Royals comeback with a six-run fifth inning.

L-R freshman outfielder Marie Mauhar (Mills River, N.C.) and sophomore third baseman Ciera Cockerham (Yadkinville, N.C.) each drove in two runs while junior Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) improved to 3-1 with the victory.? Queens' Jessica Scott (Franklin, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to take on Francis Marion on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., in a doubleheader.? Queens plays at USC Aiken in a doubleheader on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
