Greeneville, Tenn. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (44-11) continued to move through the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with an 8-0 win in five innings over Tusculum (31-24) Friday afternoon at Red Edmonds Field.
Lenoir-Rhyne advances on to face Anderson (37-11) tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., with the winner earning a spot in the championship game Sunday at 1:00 p.m.? Anderson defeated Catawba by a 7-4 score this morning.
The Bears, ranked No. 21 in the nation, also won their seventh straight game in the process.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.), the 2011 and 2012 league pitcher of the year, fired a one-hit shutout for the Bears.? Millwood improved to 30-6 on the season as she struck out six batters en route to the win.
The Bears broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the first inning capped off by a three-run home run from junior designated player Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.).
L-R pushed the advantage to 8-0 thanks to RBI doubles from senior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) and senior catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.) in the second frame.
Sophomore shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) scored twice and freshman outfielder Brittany Coursen (Virginia Beach, Va.) drove in two runs as well to lead Lenoir-Rhyne's 11-hit attack on the day.
