Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Keeps Rolling With Doubleheader Sweep Of Augusta State

Lenoir-Rhyne junior Megan Laxton hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State, 4-0 and 6-0, Tuesday afternoon at Jaguar Field in Augusta, Ga.

Augusta, Ga. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (37-10) swept a doubleheader from Augusta State (28-10), 4-0 and 6-0, Tuesday afternoon at Jaguar Field.? With the sweep, the Bears increased their winning streak to eight and are now 15-1 in their last 16 games.

L-R senior Dawon Millwood (Hixson, Tenn.) threw her 12th shutout of the season while freshman outfielder Brittany Coursen (Virginia Beach, Va.) and junior pinch hitter Megan Laxton (Taylorsville, N.C.) each hit a home run to lead the Bears to the win.

Millwood improved to 24-5 on the season after limiting the Jaguars to just two hits to go along with three strikeouts.

L-R opened the scoring with sophomore third baseman Haily Jarman's (Wadesboro, N.C.) RBI double in the first inning before Coursen connected on a solo home run in the second.

The contest remained 2-0 until Laxton's pinch-hit, two-run home run with one out?in the top of the seventh inning.

Augusta State's Emily Headrick (Rock Face, Ga.) fell to 14-3 on the year after suffering the loss on the mound for the Jaguars.

Senior Lauren Harris (Yadkinville, N.C.) pitched a four-hit shutout and improved to 7-2 on the season as the Bears completed the doubleheader sweep of the Jaguars.? Augusta State's Heather Hughes (Tallahassee, Fla.) (9-5) suffered the loss.

On offense, senior second baseman Carlee Carpenter (Newton, N.C.) and senior catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.) each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Bears.

Atkins connected on RBI singles in the first and third innings, respectively, for Lenoir-Rhyne before the Bears broke the contest open with a three-run fourth highlighted by Carpenter's two-run single.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday when it hosts Brevard in a doubleheader at Bears Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.? Augusta State, meanwhile, faces USC Aiken on the road Thursday in a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.
