The ninth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team opened the 2012 season with a 2-0 win over Georgia College Friday night in the Bears' Classic at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.

No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Opens Season By Shutting Out Georgia College, 2-0

The ninth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team opened the 2012 season with a 2-0 win over Georgia College Friday night in the Bears' Classic at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.

Hickory, N.C. - The No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (1-0) shut out Georgia College (0-1), 2-0, Friday evening in the 2012 season opener as part of the nightcap of L-R?s Women's Soccer Classic at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex in the coaching debut of new Bear mentor Cally Morrill.

L-R redshirt freshman forward Hallie Hilliard (Lenoir, N.C.) and freshman midfielder Zara Walker (Nelson, NEW ZEALAND) each scored for the Bears, who held a 19-14 advantage in shots taken in the victory.

Meanwhile, Lenoir-Rhyne senior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) picked up the shutout win in goal after tallying seven saves on the night.

Hilliard opened the scoring just over three minutes before halftime when she took control of a loose ball and connected from the top of the box.

Walker gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage in the 77th minute after scoring in the box off a cross from the left from freshman forward Leah Mullins (Kissimmee, Fla.).

Georgia College's goalkeeper Taylor Cornelius (Dacula, Ga.) suffered the loss despite allowing just two goals on the evening.

In the first match of the day, Lees-McRae (0-0-1) and Lander (0-0-1) finished with a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.

Lees-McRae's Molly Ames (Greensboro, N.C.) and Lander's Casey Black (Moore, S.C.) each scored a goal in the 75th minute of action.? For the Bearcats, Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.) picked up seven saves in goal while the Bobcats' goalkeeper, Kelsey Blair (Fort Mill, S.C.), tallied nine saves on the day.

On the final day of the tournament Sunday, Lees-McRae faces Georgia College beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Lander at 4:30 p.m., in the second contest.
