Hickory, N.C. – Both the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams stand in third place Friday after the first day of competition at the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championships at the Irwin Belk Track and Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex.
Queens (84 points) and Wingate (53 points) currently lead the women's and men's standings, respectively. For the Bears, the women's squad has totaled 30 points while the men's team has garnered 41 points.
Lenoir-Rhyne picked up a pair of conference championships on the first day: senior Latham York (Huntersville, N.C.) in the men's hammer throw (153'10”) and sophomore Derek Chavis (Lexington, N.C.) in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school-record 9:45.02.
In addition, Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Paiton Fair (Newton, N.C.) placed first in the preliminaries of the women's 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 57.96 seconds. Senior All-American Kevin Baxter (Columbia, S.C.) won the preliminaries in the men's 110-meter hurdles (14.44 seconds) for the Bears as well.
The second and final day of the championships take place on Saturday beginning with the men's shot put at 10:00 a.m. The first running event is the women's 400-meter relay at 11:10 a.m.
