Kwambai Qualifies for Nationals; Bears Finished 5th at Regionals

Wingate, N.C.-- Janet Kwambai qualified for the 2022 NCAA Championships with her second place finish today at the NCAA Southeast Regionals. Kwambai finished with a time of 21:46.37 at the Wingate University Cross Country Course Saturday Morning. Kwambai improved on her 5th place finished from a year ago in the NCAA Regionals. Kwambai will be heading to Seattle, Washington to complete in the NCAA Championship on December 2nd. 

As the team, The Bears finished in 5th place as Wingate took home the team title while Anderson and Catawba tied for second and Flager finished just ahead of the Bears in 4th. The Bears finished fifth in the 20-team event. All five of the Bears runners finished in the top 50 in the competition. 

After Kwambai, Paige Ewald finished 21st and Kathrin Polke slotted a three spots behind her teammate. Ewald finished with a time of 22:59.17 and Polke less than a second behind her (23:00.15). Polke improved eleven spots from her 35th place finished in 2021.  Elizabeth Kessler and Eliska Rihova completed the Bears scoring with a 47th place finish for Kessler and 50th place for Rihova.
