WINGATE, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne women's cross country team closed out their season on Saturday with an 11th place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regionals.
Winning the team title with 29 points was No. 1 seeded Wingate, while Catawba's Madison won the individual title with a time of 21:17.06.
"The goal for today was to compete really hard and we certainly did that," said coach
Bob Braman. "They probably should have run a more even race but some got out too fast, and I take the blame for getting them too excited. We finished one place higher than last year and Olivia ran the best race of her career. Maria went for broke and unfortunately collapsed late in the race. I give her a lot of credit for finding a way to finish and help the team on dead legs."
The Bears finished with 327 points, 10 points ahead of fellow SAC school Mars Hill.
Olivia Overholt was Lenoir-Rhyne's top finisher, taking 44th on the 6k course with a time of 23:51.78. This marks the best finish at an NCAA regional for Overholt by over 40 places. Just a few seconds behind her with a time of 23:57.86 was Mariana Quiroga, crossing the line in 52nd.
Caitlyn Christie (24:37.74) and Eva Cronin (24:43.57) were 73rd and 76th, respectively. The final scorer for the Bears was junior
Maria Carmona, who battled through a tough day to take 90th with a time of 25:00.63.
Mathilde Etienne set a new 6k personal best with a time of 25:51.82, while
Daniela Flores-Gutierrez ran a season best 26:01.72.
