Cross Country competes at SAC Championships; Leon Fischer takes home Elite 23 Award

NEWBERRY, SC - The Men's and Women's Cross Country teams competed at the SAC Championships this past weekend, with the women finishing in fifth and the men in sixth.

Highlighting the day was Leon Fischer, who took home the SAC Elite 23 Award. This award honors the student-athlete with the top cumulative GPA at the championships. Fischer, a sophomore from Weimar, Germany, holds a 4.0 GPA while studying engineering physics.

On the women's side, Sabrina Fleig led the way, finishing in 12th with a time of 22:18.0 over the 6K course. For her efforts, Fleig was named Second Team All-Conference. Senior Elizabeth Kessler, who has been improving all year, was the second Bear to cross the line. Her 6:13.6 mile average helped her finish in 24th with a time of 23:13.0. She narrowly defeated teammate Zoila Sicilia, who raced to the finish with a time of 23:13.8.

For the men, Jacob Parkinson was the lone Bear to finish in the top-ten, coming in seventh with a time of 24:35.47. This was good enough to get him named to the All-Conference First Team. Elite 23 winner Leon Fischer was the only other Bear to finish in the top-50, coming through with a time of 27:02.47, good enough for 42nd.

The Bears will now look ahead to the NCAA Southeast Regional, which will take place on Saturday, November 9th.
