SUMTER, S.C. - The #5 seeded Lenoir-Rhyne men's tennis team saw their impressive season come to a close on Friday morning, falling 4-0 to the top seeded and #8 ranked Catawba Indians.
Catawba won 6-2 and 6-0 at #2 and #3 doubles to pick up the all-important first point. Ranked #33 in the country, the doubles pairing of
Vadym Rogynskyi and
Vitor Ferreira were leading Catawba's Luca Bergonzi and Agustin Mastri 4-3 when the match was clinched, making them undefeated in the spring and 14-1 during the course of the entire year.
The Catawba Indians took the match thanks to two-set victories at #1, #2, and #3 singles.
Elijah Blackshaw won the second set at the #4 spot and
Samuil Sivinov took the first set at #5 singles.
Lenoir-Rhyne closes their season with a record of 10-5 (8-3 SAC) and advanced to the conference semi-finals for just the second time in program history. Four-year player
Vadym Rogynskyi is the Bears' only graduating senior.
