Brenda Hairston was the most versatile women's basketball player in school history. While leading the Lady Bears to a combined record of 95-28 during her four years on campus (1978-1982), she placed her name all over the school's record book. At the time of her graduation, Hairston topped Lenoir-Rhyne's list in scoring (2,409 points), assists (536), steals (396), and field goal percentage (.565). She also ranked third all-time in rebounding (906) and fourth in free throw percentage (.770). Hairston, who received all-state recognition during all four of her seasons, earned AIAW All-American status as a junior in 1981 and as a senior in 1982. She also produced Lady Bears single-season records in points (764), assists (162) and steals (118) at the time. Upon graduation from Lenoir-Rhyne, Hairston joined the United States Army. She was honorably discharged at a rank of Sergeant on April 29, 1992. Hairston bestowed a number of honors while in the army including: The Tough as a Diamond Award, The Army Achievement Medal for Meritorious Services Award, The Good Conduct Medal Claspa and Soldier of the Month twice.
